Social Media And China
China's internet censorship is regarded as one of the moat pervasive and sophisticated in the world. Seeing as the internet has become another world, a 'virtual' world it appears apparent that there is a need for censorship just as there is in the real world. In china there are such a thing as internet 'police' who strictly monitor what is uploaded from any ip address (computer).
china has manipulated internet URL addresses to provide only suitable and appropriate internet sources for society. For example china has made Google's web address google.cn as opposed to google.com (Shyu). The .cn follows China's set rules for what is allowed to be shown on the Google search engine and is forbidden. While Google has been made partially available in china, all forms of YouTube have been completely inaccessible since April 2009.
In the second half of 2009 the social media sites Facebook and Twitter were blocked, presumably because they were containing social or political commentary. Another reason for this block is that activists can utilize these forms of communication to organize themselves and arrange criminal behavior.
China's President, Jiang Zemin impletemented this censorship as a result of his belief that there are many dangers within the exchangemnt of information via the internet, he wished to provide 'safe information management'(Hughes & Vacker).
China sometimes seems so crazy! It's funny that they think this "guides" a Chinese internet user to safe media viewing....
